TEMPORARY HARDNESS
It is caused by the presence of dissolved bicarbonate minerals (calcium bicarbonate and magnesium bicarbonate). When dissolved, these minerals yield calcium and magnesium cations (Ca2+, Mg2+) and carbonate and bicarbonate anions (CO32−, HCO3−). The presence of the metal cations makes the water hard. However, unlike the permanent hardness caused by sulphate and chloride compounds, this "temporary" hardness can be reduced either by boiling the water
Hard water contains dissolved magnesium and calcium ions. These make it more difficult for the water to form a lather with soap.Temporary hardness is caused by dissolved calcium hydrogencarbonate (which is removed by boiling).
